Create a Dark & Grungy Digital Art Piece in Photoshop

Follow this step by step design process for my recent digital art piece, Vogue. The design combines textures and distressed elements to create a dark and beautiful theme. Learn how a range of Photoshop techniques pull together the various elements to create the final design.

Vogue combines the beauty of the female model with a range of grungy/dark textures and abstract elements to create an eye catching and interesting design that blends the two contrasting themes.

Open up Photoshop and import a nice base texture to form the background of the design. This particular concrete texture is from LostandTaken. Adjust the Levels to darken the tones of the texture file.

Next we’ll need to source a stock photo as the main subject of the design. This rather lovely female model image is courtesy of Katanaz-stock. Find the channel with the darkest tones and drag that layer to the ‘new icon’ to duplicate that particular channel.

Adjust the Levels of the duplicated channel to really blacken out the majority of the image, but keep an eye out for the edges becoming pixelated or distorted as the contrast increases.

Use a mixture of the Burn tool and a black brush to fill the centre areas of the image black. CMD-Click the channel thumbnail to load the selection, then toggle off the visibility of the duplicated layer and turn back on the original RGB channels.

Go to Select > Modify > Contract and enter 2px in the options box. This will help avoid clipping a thin white outline around the subject. Make a copy and paste it into your main design document.

Zoom in and check the edges for any unsightly white clippings. Use the Burn tool to remove these tiny white patches so the model sits seamlessly on the background.

Source a stock image of an ink splatter and paste it underneath the model layer. Change the blending mode to Multiply to render the white areas transparent.

Use some watercolor Photoshop brushes to add more distressed black areas around the model, particularly around the edges of the black clothing.

Add another ink splatter image to the skirt area to blend this portion of the model into the background.

Add a layer mask to the model layer and use a range of distressed Photoshop brushes to erase out portions of the model to seamlessly blend the black areas with the dark ink textures to give the impression that the model is emerging from the grungy elements.

Use the Polygonal Lasso tool to draw a thin diagonal selection over the design. Press CMD+Shift+C to Copy Merged and paste back into the document. Move this new selection to offset from the original to create an abstract effect.

Erase out the hard edges using a grungy brush on a layer mask to limit the offset effect to the model’s body.

Create a series of other offset effects across the design each at a different size and thickness.

Switch over to Adobe Illustrator to create a simple triangle shape with the pen tool. Copy this shape and paste it into the Photoshop document.

Randomly rotate and scale multiple copies of the triangle to create a series of shard elements. Position groups of shards to flare from behind the model.

Change the blending mode of the shard to Overlay. The overlay effect alone isn’t quite powerful enough, so duplicate the layers and adjust the opacity of the new layers to give the shards more prominence.

Draw more rectangular selections across the document, but this time give them a white fill. Change their blending modes to Overlay, adjust the opacity and erase out the edges with a layer mask.

Use a large grungy brush to add a red fill to the lower portion of the design. Change this layer to Color Dodge and lower the opacity to leave a very subtle colour cast.

Add an area of blue to the top corner, followed by a strip of purple in the centre. Change these layers to Soft Light and adjust their opacities to create more subtle colour casts.

A grungy white brush stroke in the centre of the canvas set to Overlay will brighten up the details in this otherwise darker portion of the design.

Press CMD+A to Select All, CMD+Shift+C to Copy Merged and CMD+V to paste in a copy of the whole design at the top of the layer stack. Go to Filter > Other > High Pass and adjust the settings so the details are just visible from the grey backdrop.

Set this high pass layer to Linear Light at around 50%. This layer really sharpens up the design and brings out the tiniest details. Add a layer mask and erase out portions around the edges to create subtle changes of focus.

Use some long brush strokes to create a border around the canvas to frame the design. Set this border to Soft Light at 65%.

Finish off the design with a title. Here I’ve added the title ‘Vogue’ in suitably beautiful Bodoni font and set the layers to Overlay. A few highlight brushes help add some pretty sparkles to the text.

How To Create Detailed Gothic Linework Typography

Follow this step by step walkthough of the design process for my recent gothic typography design. We’ll be customising a blackletter font with various black and white elements and creating a range of tones with detailed linework to create a cool gothic style design that would be right at home as a logo for a heavy metal band or dark apparel brand.

The ‘Eclipse’ design (no Twilight jokes, please!) is made up of a series of outlines around the type, combined with various tiny details to add shading to the text. These shading elements include a series of closely packed sharp triangles and a spread of horizontal lines.

Open up Illustrator and type out your band name / apparel brand / random word of choice in a suitable blackletter style font. Here I’m using the font named Cloister Black as it includes some nice sharp angles and a cool looking traditional ‘S’.

I wasn’t too keen on the tails on the letters ‘L’ and ‘P’, so one of the first steps for me was to customise the type by copying a selection from the letter ‘I’ and using it as a replacement ascender/descender. Convert the font to outlines using the shortcut CMD+Shift+O so edits can be made.

Once all the type customisations are made, Merge all the elements together using the Pathfinder tool.

Draw a large black rectangle across the artboard to use as a background on a new layer and lock it in place. With the text selected, go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Enter 0.25mm in the options window.

Right click and Ungroup the two text elements then add a white fill to the newly created outline.

Select the outlining shape then go to Object > Path > Offset Path, this time enter 0.75mm in the options window. Fill this outline with black.

With the newly created black outline still selected make another Offset Path of 1mm and fill it with white.

Make yet another offset path using the largest outline, this time use a 1mm setting.

Fill this largest outline with a white swatch. These outlines alone are already giving the type a cool Guitar Hero style effect.

Each letter’s outline currently overlaps the previous letter, which looks a little ugly. Select all the shapes that make up the largest outline and Merge them with the Pathfinder. Send these items to the back (CMD+Shift+[).

Repeat the process, but this time with the next outline. Select and merge together all the black outlines to convert them into one shape. Send it to the back, then up one level (CMD+]) to sit above the outer white outline.

Select the next thin white outline and merge them all together. Send the merged item to the back then bring it back into the correct level using the CMD+[ shortcut.

Select all the original letters from the centre of the design, copy and paste in front (CMD+F). Give them a white fill, then go to Object > Compound Path > Make.

Draw a clear rectangle covering the lower half of the text and use this along with the Subtract option from the Pathfinder to trim down the white text.

Elsewhere on the document use the Star tool to draw a triangle. Press the downwards cursor key while dragging the shape to lower the number of points. Remove the bezier points from the centre of each line with the Pen tool.

Select and nudge the two side points inwards to make the triangle thinner, then move the upper point vertically to stretch it out. Hold Alt and Shift while dragging the triangle to the side to make a duplicate, then continuously press the shortcut CMD+D to repeat the transformation until you have a series of repeating shapes.

Make a Compound Path out of the triangles, then make copies and position them over each letter where the white and black shapes meet in the centre.

Working on each letter individually, make a copy of the original black letter, send it to the top (CMD+Shift+]) and use this as a tool to trim to the triangles to size using the Pathfinder Intersect option.

Continue making copies of each subsequent letter and trim down the triangles so they sit perfectly inside the letter outlines.

Draw a horizontal line on the artboard and give it a 0.25pt black stroke. Make sure it’s longer than the design itself.

With the line selected hold Alt and press the downward cursor key. Continuously press CMD+D to repeat this transformation until you have a series of lines larger than the text.

Draw a selection over all the lines and go to Object > Expand. Select just the stroke setting in the options box.

Make a Compound Path out of the series of lines by going to Object > Compound Path > Make.

To trim the lines down so they fit inside the text we’ll need to create a duplicate of one of the outline shapes. Bring this item to the top and Ungroup the objects. Make a Compound Path of all these letter shapes.

With the series of lines and the duplicated letter outlines selected, click the Intersect option from the Pathfinder palette.

The lines have been trimmed so they fit within the text, but we don’t want them to fill the centre of the text.

Make a copy of the inner letters and make a Compound Path. Ungroup the series of lines and make another Compound Path out of these objects.

Use the Pathfinder once again, but this time choose the Subtract option in order to punch out the letters from the linework so they fit exactly into the confines of the outline.

Elsewhere on the artboard use a duplicate of the small triangle to create a radial flare with the Rotate tool. Set the pivot point at the bottom and drag a copy using the Alt key. Make duplicates using the CMD+D shortcut.

Make copies of this group of radial triangles and position them across the design wherever there’s a concave corner.

Go back through the design with a crazy zoom level to check for any overlapping points. Delete out such shapes using the Direct Selection Tool.

Make a Copy (CMD+C) and Paste Behind (CMD+B) a duplicate of the outer outline. Nudge this shape downwards vertically then switch the fill to black and give it a 0.5pt white stroke.

In order to finish off the three dimensional appearance, some areas of the duplicated outline need filling. Toggle outline mode (CMD+Y) and zoom right in. Use the Pen tool to draw gap filling shapes between the relevant points.

Select all the newly created gap filling shapes along with the black and white outline and merge them together with the Pathfinder tool.

This leaves the actual typographic portion of the design complete. The detailed linework does a great job of adding shading and tone to the design, while the little flares on each corner give a shiny/sparkly effect – All without the use of gradients or colours.

To finish off the design, download some accompanying ornamental elements. This particular vector pack is courtesy of WeGraphics and is available for download in the Access All Areas section.

Ungroup the vector elements in order to change the linework to white and switch the inner fill from yellow to black to match the rest of the design.

Add an additional stroke to the black outline to give the text prominence against the detail of the ornamental elements.

Combined with the ornamental elements the typographic design looks great. The vectors really enhance the gothic style and disguise the text a little to make the design a tad more abstract.

Create a Cute Vector Reindeer Character in Illustrator

With Christmas being just around the corner I thought it would be fitting to create a festive themed tutorial. Follow this step by step process to design a cute little vector reindeer character. We’ll begin by creating the basic structure of the character with basic shapes, then build up the details with gradients and effects.

Here’s the final character we’ll be creating. The simple and rounded shapes really help add to its cuteness while and his general chubbiness and the fact that he stands on two legs helps build upon the quirky and stylised style of design.

There’s three basic stages to the design process. Firstly the core outlines are created to form the basic structure of the character, once the character is built out of a range of complete shapes each of these shapes can then be given a colour fill. The design really comes to life in the third step, where shading and effects add depth and dimension.

Open up Adobe Illustrator and draw an ellipse on the artboard as the main body of the reindeer. Leave the default white fill and black stroke for now.

Draw a slightly thinner ellipse overlapping the body to represent a patch of belly fur. Copy (CMD+C) and Paste in Front (CMD+F) a duplicate of the body shape and send it to the top of the stack using the shortcut CMD+Shift+]. Select the duplicate body shape along with the previously created ellipse and use the Intersect option from the Pathfinder tool to trim away the excess.

Continue adding some smaller ellipses in various orientations to build up a head and muzzle. Begin adding a smaller ellipse as a little ear, rotated slightly.

Copy (CMD+C) and Paste in Front (CMD+F) a duplicate of the ear, then go to Object > Transform > Reflect to mirror the ear.

Select the two ears along with the ellipse that makes up the head and blend them together using the Merge option from the Pathfinder tool.

Draw some circles on the head area to represent a couple of eyes and a nose, then add another circle over the lower muzzle area. Make a duplicate of the muzzle piece to use this as a tool with the Pathfinder to trim away the excess so the circle fits within the muzzle area.

Select the Blob Brush tool and draw the basic shape of an antler. A pen tablet comes in handy here to make the most of pressure sensitivity. Make a duplicate of the antler, go to Object > Transform > Reflect, then group both antlers together. Select the antler group and the head, then click the head once more to make this the key object. Use the Align palette to center up the objects.

Use the shortcut CMD+Shift+[ to send the antlers to the bottom of the stack, making them sit underneath the head. Elsewhere on the artboard draw a long thin rounded rectangle with maximum corner radius. With this shape selected go to Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Warp.

In the Warp Options bend the rectangle by around 40% vertically using the Arc setting. Send this shape to the bottom of the stack (CMD+Shift+[) then position it into place as an arm.

Draw an ellipse over the lower portion paying attention to the line that cuts across the arm. Make a duplicate of the arm and use this with the Pathfinder to intersect the shape.

Group the arm and the newly created hoof object, make a copy and reflect them onto the other side of the body. Make another group of both arms so they can be aligned centrally on the body. Grab the Rounded Rectangle tool again to draw a couple of thin legs.

Draw two circles at the bottom of the legs to act as feet, then use the Direct Selection tool to manipulate their shape by dragging the lower most point vertically upwards to squash the lower edge.

The reindeer character is looking quite plain so far with just a series of basic shapes, but it will soon start to come to life with some colour.

Select each portion of the character individually and swap the black and white fill/stroke combination with a radial gradient. Use the Gradient tool to move the gradient around to create a blend between light and shade. This change of colour is what adds depth and gives the impression of a three dimensional character.

Use lighter beige tones on the muzzle and belly area to contrast against the brown fur, and of course give the reindeer a bright red nose.

Light sources almost always come from above, so make sure the lighter tone on each gradient is at the top, which gets darker nearer the bottom of the shape.

The reindeer character now looks recognisable with the colour fills, but it still looks a little basic. This is where more subtle shading and highlighting effects really bring the character to life.

Draw some more ellipses around the eyes and inside the ears. Give these shapes a dark brown gradient that fades to transparency. These shapes give the impression of a kind of inset appearance because the gradient uses the darker colour at the top, which would be a shadow in real life.

Select the main body shape and go to Effect > Stylize > Inner Glow. Keep the default settings of Screen and white, but change the opacity to 30% and alter the blur to 5mm.

Continue selecting the other brown body shapes and add a similar Inner Glow. On smaller shapes like the head and arms use a smaller amount of blur, around 3mm.

Add the Inner Glow effect to the nose, then also add a soft Drop Shadow to really give it a three dimensional appearance. Set the opacity to 30%, X-offset to zero and the Y-offset and Blur to 1mm.

Also give the belly fur a soft Drop Shadow, but this time set the Y-offset to -2mm and increase the blur to 2mm.

On all grey objects such as the antlers and hooves, an an Inner Glow but instead of using white/Screen, set the options to black/Multiply.

Make a copy of one of the antlers, then draw an ellipse over the shape so the outline flows neatly along the length of the antler. Use the Subtract option from the Pathfinder tool to trim down this shape, then set the fill to black and 20% opacity.

Draw a couple of variously sized circles over the nose to act as specular highlights. Give these circles a white fill and a low opacity of around 20%.

Create more smooth shapes over the hooves and trim each one down to create subtle little shadows on the lower edges.

These last few additions of Inner Glow and shadow effects really transform the design giving it extra depth and dimension. The more shading and impressions of light and shade the more realistic a design will look, even if it’s made from basic shapes like Mr. Reindeer here.

How To Create a Repeating Camo Pattern in Illustrator

A couple of weeks back I posted a collection of free military camouflage patterns, featuring woodland, desert, urban and digital style designs. This week I’m going to show you how the camo designs were created and how the pattern file was made so it would seamlessly repeat.

To ensure the patterns we create a touch of realism source an image of some kind of military clothing photograph to pick out colours to form a palette, and to see how each coloured element differs in shape and size.

Draw a large rectangle to form the base for the other coloured elements. Then use Illustrator’s blob brush along with a pen tablet to draw random shapes using the first colour from the palette. A graphics tablet offers much finer control than a mouse, especially when creating the tight corners and bends seen in these types of camo blobs.

Continue drawing the outlines of the camouflage elements, this time using the second colour from the palette. Pay attention to the shape and size of the elements on the original reference image, some overlap or follow the contour of the colour underneath.

In this particular pattern the black elements are the smallest and most detailed shapes. They are scattered across the pattern overlapping all the other colours.

Once the outlines of the camo elements are complete, begin filling the shapes using the Live Paint Bucket tool by moving the mouse until the red outline surrounds the empty space.

The camouflage pattern really starts to come to life once all the colour fills are in place. Notice how the beige shapes are the largest and smoothest, the whites are slightly smaller and more detailed whereas the black objects are much smaller and have much more detail in their outline.

Select each of the coloured elements and go to Object > Expand. Check just the ‘Object’ checkbox to convert the Live Paint fills into solid shapes.

Right click and select Ungroup until you can select the outline and the fill of each object separately, then combine them both using the Merge option from the Pathfinder palette.

Use the line tool to draw a small red cross in the upper left corner of the camo pattern. This cross will come in handy later when creating the repeating swatch.

Select all the elements that make up the camo pattern so far and group them together. Copy (CMD+C) then Paste in Front (CMD+F) a duplicate, then hit Enter to open up the Move options. Enter 350mm (or a figure to suit the scale of your design) to position two copies of the pattern side by side.

Paste in another copy of the pattern and hit Enter. This time move the pattern vertically to sit underneath the original. These duplicates should overlap slightly to avoid any unsightly gaps between them. The large beige blobs will merge together smoothly.

Paste in one more copy of the pattern and move it horizontally and vertically using the same figures to fill a larger square portion of the screen. You can now check the design for gaps and add more elements where they are needed, but remember to delete and relocate the duplicates if a change is made so any new elements appears in the correct place on each of the copies.

Give a rectangle a visible blue stroke and align it roughly to the red crosses on each of the four duplicate patterns.

Press CMD+Y to toggle outline view, then zoom right in and use the Direct Selection Tool to drag each edge of the rectangle precisely into place over the crosses.

Delete the four red crosses, then select the four patterns and the large background rectangle and group them all together using the CMD+G shortcut.

Use the Crop feature from the Pathfinder palette to trim everything down to size. The pattern has been clipped exactly so the shapes will continue exactly when copies of the swatch are placed side by side.

Drag the graphic into the Swatches palette in Illustrator to allow the pattern to be added to other objects as a fill colour, or paste the design in Photoshop and go to Edit > Define Pattern.

The final pattern is now ready to be added to your designs. Remember, the larger the initial design the less obvious any repeating elements will be as the duplicate elements will be spread further apart.
